Alex Othmer on CBS Morning News: Veteran & First Responder Mental Health

Friday, August 28, 2026 | New York

Guardian Revival co-founder, Board President, and former Navy SEAL Alex Othmer appeared live on CBS Morning News today to talk about how the One Mile Challenge and time outdoors — movement alone or with others, and connection with nature — can help military, veterans, and first responders navigate mental health struggles.

In the interview segment, Alex shared a bit of his own experience transitioning out of the Navy SEALs and how spending time in nature, caring for his dog, and playing music became part of his own healing. He spoke about our annual One Mile Challenge as well as the broader mission behind Guardian Revival: helping guardians access free programs and community that support their mental health and well-being.

We are so grateful for CBS for helping bring more visibility to Guardian Revival, the One Mile Challenge (OMC), and the guardians we support — because the One Mile Challenge is simple. The reason behind it isn’t.

Some battles don’t end when a shift ends, a deployment is over, or service comes to a close — they can last long after, often in silence. The weight of trauma and the daily challenge of carrying it is what inspired the One Mile Challenge: an opportunity for guardians, families, and the broader public to show up together, wherever we are, and walk one mile a day for 30 days in honor and support of mental health.

Kick off the One Mile Challenge with us

We've got a free, in-person kickoff event to start OMC strong together in Beacon on Tuesday, September 1. You don't even need to be signed up for OMC to join, so come with a friend! See you there?
