American Military History Series

This month’s American Military History series features Silver Star recipient Karl Rohde’s story of being in Vietnam with the US Army.

Karl joined the Army in December 1968. After Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training (AIT) at Fort Jackson, SC, he arrived in Vietnam in July 1969. Karl was assigned 196th Light Infantry Brigade of the Americal Division. After 2 months in the field, he was assigned to the 523rd Signal Battalion of the Americal Division.

During this presentation, Karl will share his story of being in Vietnam along with some insights into U.S. Forces experience during the war, including combat, rations, Christmas, and more. He also shares some of his poems & early publications back home in the weekly The Yorktowner.

Karl was awarded the Silver Star during combat in Vietnam (and received numerous other awards). He currently serves as the Director of the Putnam County Veterans Service Agency.
